Groblersdal assault: Corrie Pretorius pleads guilty

The man accused of assaulting a teenager outside a fish and chips shop in Groblersdal, Limpopo, has pleaded guilty in the Groblersdal Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Corrie Pretorius pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Provincial National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the state withdrew the charge of pointing of a firearm due to insufficient evidence.

Pretorius was charged after a 41-second video emerged of him dragging a 16-year-old on the ground while carrying a firearm.

In the video, he can also be seen kicking and stomping the teen as he lay on the ground.

The case was postponed to 2 December 2022 for pre-sentencing.

Suspect arrested for the murder of German tourist in Mpumalanga

A man has been arrested for the murder of a German tourist who was shot and killed last week.

Mpumalanga Police spokeperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the man was arrested on Wednesday evening in Nelspruit.

"He is 32 years old and faces three charges: murder, attempted murder and attempted hijacking.

"He will be appearing at Kabokweni Magistrate's Court today (Friday)."

While there had been speculations about the attackers' nationality, Mohlala said the arrested man is South African.

The 67-year-old German man was killed last week while travelling with three others from the Drakensberg to Mdluli Safari Lodge in the Kruger National Park.

One killed in Durban 'horror' crash

A man has been killed in a truck accident on Bluff Road in Durban on Friday.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said medical services arrived on the scene to find "total carnage".

"It is believed that a truck lost control and collided into a pedestrian on the sidewalk before coming to rest against a wall."

"One person a male believed to be in his 30s sustained major injuries and there was nothing more paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene."

Jamieson said the circumstances leading up to the accident were unknown and police were on the scene to investigate.

JUST IN | Police arrest one man in kidnapping of 4-year-old Bokgabo Poo

Gauteng police have arrested a man linked to the kidnapping case of Bokgabo Poo, who went missing from Benoni, east of Johannesburg, earlier this week.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the man was arrested in Boksburg North on Friday morning.

"It is reported that a member of the community saw the suspect in Boksburg North and called the police, who responded swiftly and arrested the suspect."

He said police were currently interviewing the suspect about the whereabouts of little Poo after the 4-year-old's disappearance on Monday.

Five more suspected July unrest instigators arrested

Five suspects accused of having a hand in instigating the July 2021 civil unrest were granted R3 000 bail each in the Durban Magistrate's Court, the Hawks said on Friday.

Philani Maphumulo, 30, also known as Gundi, Samkelisiwe Gumede, 33, Zamile Mlambo, 41, Sithembile Mthembu, 35, and Nelisiwe Ndlovu, 32, appeared on Thursday and were warned to return to court on 30 November.

They were charged with conspiracy to commit public violence and incitement to commit public violence. 

The five were arrested on Thursday during a day-long "takedown" operation by the Hawks, spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

"The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the July unrest in 2021. This brings the tally to a total of 61 alleged instigators that have been arrested including the five that were arrested on 13 October 2022."

Gauteng pupil, 12, who had been undergoing counselling dies by suicide

A Grade 7 pupil in Randfontein has died by suicide following concerns about his well-being.

The pupil from Avanté Primary School died on Thursday.

Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona said the incident occurred after counselling sessions with the pupil at school.

"The [counselling sessions] emanated from concerns over his well-being before recess in September 2022," he said.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has sent condolences to the family and school community.

"As the department, we are shattered by this incident. We call upon learners who may be experiencing personal difficulties to reach out to our support systems that are readily available at their schools," said Chiloane.

Mabona said Chiloane would visit the pupil's home in Randfontein at 12:00.

Two cops shot dead in ambush while responding to complaint in Boksburg

Two police officers were shot and killed in Boksburg on Thursday evening.

Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said the officers from Boksburg North Police Station were responding to a complaint of an unnatural death in the area when they were accosted by three males.

"At the time of the attack, the pair were waiting for a mortuary van when they were disarmed and fatally wounded."

Suspected serial arsonist behind the torching of 24 Joburg homes appears in court

The man believed to have been the one who burnt down several houses in Johannesburg's northern suburbs made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Ndodenye Alfred Maphutha, 36, appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

He faces one count of murder, 24 of arson and 24 of house breaking.

The case was postponed was postponed to Tuesday for him to get a lawyer.

It was also revealed in court that Maphutha has a previous conviction of house breaking.

Maphutha was caught in Emmarentia on Tuesday after a tipoff led to his whereabouts.

Man accused of selling feeding scheme food dies by suicide before showing cops the buyer

A 34-year-old man who allegedly sold food parcel stock worth thousands of rand to an unknown person in Limpopo died by suicide before showing police who the buyer was.

The body of the man was found on Wednesday in Polokwane.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi, the man is said to have illegally sold stock that was intended for the schools.

"He was meant to show us the location where he sold the stolen properties, but that never materialised as he was found dead at the premises, which was used for storage," said Seabi.

Police have launched an inquest and are on a manhunt for the unknown suspect who purchased the feeding scheme food.

Krugersdorp gang rapes: former cop arrested

A former police officer has been arrested in relation to the Krugersdorp gang rapes.

The woman is the one who had allegedly helped the film crew scout the location where the gang rapes later happened.

Police spokesperson Colonel Brenda Muridili said the woman was arrested on Wednesday.

She has been charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.

"It was discovered by the investigating officer that the woman had in her possession property that belongs to one of the victims of rape."

In July, eight women were raped while filming a music video.

The crew of 20 was also robbed of their film equipment, cellphones and money.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo hands over amended version of state capture report

The Presidency on Wednesday confirmed that it has received the amended version of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry report from Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, who chaired the Commission.

The release follows the granting of permission by the Pretoria High Court on the 4th of October 2022, to allow Chief Justice Zondo to make corrections to the final volume of the report which was submitted to the Presidency in June 2022. 

The corrections will be in Volume 2 and Volume 3 of the report. Both were handed to Ramaphosa on 22 June.

The amended report will be made available on the Presidency’s website, the Presidency said.

Electricity restored to most parts of eThekwini after major outage

The eThekwini Municipality says electricity has been restored in most of the areas affected by Tuesday's major power outage.

Around 50% of the households in Durban were left without power following an explosion at a major substation in Klaarwater on Tuesday evening.

The municipality says the outage was caused by a trip out at the substation, a key supply point to the City from Eskom.

"The City's technicians are still on site to ensure full restoration of electricity as Shallcross is still affected by the outage."

Cop, civilian die as police car crashes into a tree in Soweto

A police officer and a civilian died after the officer's vehicle crashed into a tree in Soweto, Gauteng, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the police sergeant attached to the Infrastructure Unit in Johannesburg District was on duty at the time and travelling with a civilian when the accident occurred.

"When police arrived on the scene at around 01:40, they found that the police car had crashed into a tree in Protea North, Soweto.

"Both the victims were certified dead on the scene, and the cause of the accident cannot be confirmed at this stage," he said.

Masondo did not say what the civilian was doing the officer's vehicle but said a case of culpable homicide has been opened to investigate the circumstances that led to the accident.

Man, 32, arrested for teenage girl's death following hit-and-run in Bonteheuwel

A 32-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday morning in connection with a hit-and-run incident in which an 18-year-old girl was run over and later died.

The man will be charged with reckless and negligent driving, and culpable homicide when he appears in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court later today.

The incident happened in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town on Sunday.

The teenage victim, Tatum Hendricks, died in hospital on Monday.

Gunmen flee without taking anything after killing 3 people, wounding 2 in Khayelitsha

Three men have been left dead and two others injured after a shooting on Monday night in Harare, Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape.

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut, unknown suspects entered a house on Siphendule Crescent and shot the occupants.

Traut said nothing was stolen at the house.

Police are investigating the motive.

A 72-hour activation plan has been initiated, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the My SAPS mobile application, said Traut.

Prosecutor found guilty of corruption after asking for a bribe to make case 'disappear'

A 50-year-old Limpopo prosecutor has been convicted of corruption for asking for a R6 000 bribe to make a case "disappear".

In 2020, Leonard Ratshilumela asked for a bribe from the mother of a minor accused of reckless and negligent driving charges.

The case was then reported to the Hawks, who arrested him after a sting operation in Thohoyandou.

He was convicted on Monday by the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court. He will be sentenced on 21 November.

According to Hawks Limpopo spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke, Ratshilumela's legal troubles are not over yet.

While on bail for the bribery case, Ratshilumela was re-arrested after allegedly trying to kill witnesses.

He is facing four counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted arson. He allegedly used petrol to burn down a key witness house in Mukula village.

Top police brass to visit Stilfontein mine after 24 firearms seized, 20 zama zamas arrested

Police Minister Bheki Cele was expected to visit Stilfontein, Klerksdorp, in the North West on Tuesday following the seizure of 24 firearms and the arrest of 20 zama zamas.

Cele will be joined by the head of the Hawks, Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya and national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola.

The firearms and an undisclosed amount of money were seized during the arrests at a mining shaft on Monday.

According to the Hawks, the firearms comprise 15 AK47s, six hunting rifles, two shotguns and one R5.

Boxes full of ammunition and explosives were also seized.

The 20 suspects were expected to make their first appearance in the Stilfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

They face preliminary charges of conspiracy to commit robbery to wit gold, possession of prohibited firearms, possession of ammunition and contravention of the Immigration Act.

Woman dies after being gang raped, set alight with paraffin in Kimberley

A 34-year-old woman died after she was gang raped and set alight in Roodepan, Kimberley, over the weekend, provincial police said.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock, said allegations were that three men raped the woman in Lethabo Park on Friday evening. Men then later set her alight with paraffin.

Kock said the woman was found near a shack and rushed to hospital.

She succumbed to her injuries in hospital on Saturday.

Pretoria magistrate Desmond Nair in the dock over alleged corruption linked to Bosasa

Suspended Pretoria Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair has been charged with corruption related to the infamous Bosasa.

Nair, who has spent most of his career in the magistrate's seat, found himself in the dock of the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday morning.

Nair has been charged with corruption after allegedly accepting the installation of R200 000 worth of security systems at his Pretoria home, including a full electric fence, CCTV and alarm systems by Bosasa.

The chief magistrate was implicated by former Bosasa employee Richard le Roux in the State Capture Commission.

News24 previously reported that Nair confirmed that security cameras were installed at his private residence but said this was "... pursuant to a private agreement". 

Senior Pretoria magistrate expected in court on charges of corruption linked to Bosasa

A senior Pretoria magistrate was expected to appear in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday morning on corruption charges.

The Investigating Directorate's spokesperson Sindisiwe Seboka said the magistrate's charges emanate from alleged corruption linked to Bosasa.

News24 reported earlier this month that Angelo Agrizzi was due to appear in a Pretoria court for his alleged role in the R1.8 billion Bosasa fraud case.

Agrizzi failed to appear in court on several occasions due to his ailing health. His co-accused include - former correctional services commissioner Linda Mti, former DCS chief financial officer Patrick Gillingham, and former Bosasa CFO Andries Van Tonder.

The criminal matter involves four tenders valued at more than R1.8 billion, which were awarded to Bosasa and its subsidiaries between August 2004 and 2007.

News24 previously reported that these tenders were for catering and training services, installing CCTV cameras, installing perimeter fencing, the supply of a television system, and monitoring equipment.

It is alleged that these tenders were won through corrupt means.

Six decomposed bodies found at Joburg building

Gauteng police made a gruesome discovery when they found six decomposed bodies at a building in Johannesburg on Sunday.

"The police were called to the building due to a foul smell coming out of one of the rooms. That is when a body of a woman was found," Gauteng Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said.

Muridili said preliminary investigations led officers to a 21-year-old man who was last seen with the woman on 2 October.

"She was never seen again until her body was discovered on Sunday morning. The clothes she was wearing matched the description of one of the missing persons reported recently.

"Upon questioning the suspect, the police went back to the building, and five more bodies were discovered outside the building where there is a makeshift workshop and rubbish dumpsters," Muridili said.

She said the other five bodies were at a late stage of decomposition and would be subjected to forensic analysis for identification.

The suspect was charged with six counts of murder.

Mom arrested for allegedly killing son and stabbing two other people

A 36-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly killing her 13-year-old son and stabbing her 63-year-old mother.

Mpumalanga police said the incident happened at a woman's home in Volksrust over the weekend and that the woman also stabbed her 8-month-old baby girl.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said officers were called after a fight broke out at home on Friday.

On arrival, officers found a teenage boy lying in a pool of blood in the lounge.

"The slain victim had a visible stab wound on the chest and his throat. Meanwhile, the suspect's mom, 63, was found hiding in the toilet also with a stab wound on her lower body while the injured toddler (eight months) was found in the same room with the suspect," Mdhluli said.

The woman was arrested and charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. She was expected to appear in the Volksrust's District Court on Monday.

Body of Cape Town man found in hole he dug himself at his home

Western Cape police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a 48-year-old man was found in a hole he dug up on his premises, near Lesar Court in Steenberg, on Saturday night.

It was reported that the man had dug the hole on Tuesday, and his family searched for him after he had failed to return home.

"The services of Fire and Rescue [were] acquired and they discovered [the] body of the victim covered under the sand. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel," said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

Police in Kagiso are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident on Friday night at a liquor outlet in Soul City. 

It is reported that a group of people gathered at a house and bought liquor. While they were drinking and enjoying themselves, they were attacked by two suspects wearing balaclavas who shot randomly outside and inside the house.

"It is not yet known how the suspects fled the scene. The motive for the shooting will form part of investigations," said Brigadier Brenda Muridili.

Western Cape police have confirmed to News24 that Anichka Penev, 35, who was kidnapped more than a week ago in Ipswich Road, Blue Downs was found on Friday night. 

"She has been safely reunited with her loved ones," said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

Police are staying mum on Penev's release and said "the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping are still under investigation."

Newly elected Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi reshuffles his executive, two MECs get the chop

Newly elected Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has reshuffled his executive a day after his election.

The first to face the chop was Parks Tau, who was Gauteng Economic Development and Agriculture MEC.

Lesufi promoted former ANC Youth League leader Matome Chiloane to replace him as education MEC.

Meanwhile, Jacob Mamabolo was promoted to the provincial Treasury from public transport and roads infrastructure MEC.

Another notable change was splitting the department of Human Settlements, Urban Planning and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs into two entities - Human settlement and Cogta.

Muzi Khumalo has been appointed as the new Cogta MEC, with Lesufi saying he will be focusing mostly on coalitions.

“Human settlements needs to be prioritied separately as we try and revive the township, informal settlement and our hostels,” said Lesufi.

Lebogang Maile remains human settlements MEC.

Man killed, toddler seriously injured as brick truck loses control

A man was killed and three people injured, including a toddler, when a truck carrying bricks lost control on the M3 in Cape Town on Friday, Cape Town traffic services said.

The truck and trailer were travelling along the M3 outbound when a tyre burst and it lost control, crossing over to the M3 inbound and crashing into three cars between Firgrove Bridge and Ladies Mile.

The truck's bricks were strewn across the road. A 38-year-old man was declared dead on the scene, and two men sustained slight injuries.

A two-year-old toddler was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The road was closed between the M3 inbound at Firgrove Bridge, the M3 inbound at Tokai road, and the Tokai ramp onto the M3.

JUST IN | Zuma's 15-month prison sentence for contempt of court comes to an end

Friday officially marked the end of former president Jacob Zuma's prison sentence for being in contempt of court.

The Constitutional Court sentenced him to 15 months in jail in its judgment on 29 June last year and he was admitted on 8 July 2021.

He was subsequently placed on medical parole on 5 September 2021.

If Zuma had not been granted medical parole, Friday 7 October would have been his prison release date.

"Medical parole placement meant that Mr Zuma was to serve the remainder of his sentence under Kranskop Community Corrections. Essentially, Mr Zuma complied with his conditions for medical parole as set out during his placement," said correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

"All administrative processes have now been concluded and the sentence expiry date marks the end of him serving his sentence under community corrections."

One dead in Krugersdorp truck crash

One person has been killed after two trucks collided in Pinehaven, Krugersdorp. Several other cars were also involved in the accident.

Gauteng traffic police, in a Tweet, confirmed the accident, warning motorists against using cellphones while driving.

"Using a cellphone whilst driving is an offence and can lead to secondary crashes."

Pictures and videos of the crash, depicting trucks on fire and a heavy traffic jam, have been widely shared on social media.

"Finding out your loved one is injured/dead from a social media post has immense repercussions," police added.

The six men accused of murdering Gauteng whistleblower Babita Deokaran have changed legal representatives.

On Thursday, the case against Phakamani Hadebe, Zitha Radebe, Nhlangano Ndlovu, Sanele Mbhele, Siphiwe Mazibuko and Siphakanyiswa Dladla was postponed to 18 November.

"The case was postponed for disclosure of the copies of the docket to the new lawyer," said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

Deokaran was assassinated in August last year outside her house, days after she flagged suspicious payments amounting to millions.

Western Cape High Court declared safe after bomb threat

The Western Cape High Court has been declared safe following a bomb scare earlier on Thursday.

Officers responded to the scene following a complaint of a bomb threat at the court received by the police’s radio control room.

Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, says the building was evacuated while the provincial explosives unit, assisted by handlers of the Provincial K9 unit, entered the building in search of “suspicious parcels or objects”.

Swartbooi says: “We can confirm that the building has been declared safe for business as usual.”

Panyaza Lesufi elected Gauteng premier after defeating DA candidate Solly Msimanga

Gauteng has a new premier in former MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi who was elected during a special sitting of the legislature on Thursday.

Lesufi defeated DA candidate Solly Msimanga by 16 votes. He received 38 of the 60 votes that were cast while Msimanga got 22.

There were 13 members that did not vote.

His election comes as a result of the resignation of former premier David Makhura who has been at the helm of the province since 2014.

Limpopo premier reshuffles executive following ANC instructions

Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha has reshuffled his Cabinet for a second time.

Mathabatha's latest political move follows instructions from the provincial ANC leadership that provincial treasurer Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana and deputy provincial chairperson Florence Radzilani should be given positions in the provincial government executive.

Radzilani and Sibanda were recently elected at the provincial conference in June.

Radzilani has been awarded the transport and community safety portfolio while Sibanda-Kekana serves as the MEC for sports, arts and culture.

This is the reshuffle by Mathabatha who fired two Cabinet members following his re-election as ANC provincial chairperson in June.

5 more Western Cape hospitals exempt from load shedding

Five more hospitals in the Western Cape have been exempted from load shedding, bringing the total number of hospitals protected in the province to eight.

The move follows an urgent media briefing at the end of last month by Provincial Health MEC Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, following an announcement by her national counterpart, Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla.

Since then, the City of Cape Town and Eskom have made progress in exempting other hospitals.

Tygerberg, Groote Schuur and Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospitals were already exempt prior to the request for the additional 19 other hospitals.

New Somerset Hospital, Mitchells Plain Hospital, Karl Bremer Hospital, Victoria Hospital and George Hospital will now join the growing list of hospitals that will be excluded from load shedding.

Mthatha residents recover body of boy, 10, who drowned

Mthatha residents recovered the body of a boy, 10, who drowned earlier this week.

The boy had been swimming with his friends in the Cicira River near Slovo Park on Monday when he went under.

The search was initially called off due to poor light. Subsequent efforts to find his body were unsuccessful.

On Wednesday afternoon, residents found his body floating about 20 metres away from where he had gone missing.

"Police were summoned and attended [to the scene]. On their arrival, the deceased was pointed [out] under the tree, covered with a blanket," said Sergeant Kaya Matola-Mvanyashe.

The body had no injuries and no foul play was suspected.

Case against suspected illegal mining kingpins postponed

The case against six kingpins believed to be behind illegal mining activities in the West Rand has been postponed in the Carletonville Magistrate's Court.

The men appeared briefly before magistrate Seanokeng Diale on Wednesday.

They are facing charges that include fraud, possession of ammunition, contravention of the Immigration Act, contravention of the precious metal Act and possession of drugs.

The men were arrested during a sting operation by the Hawks in Carletonville and Khutsong on Tuesday.

Fourteen high-performance vehicles and a truck owned by the suspects were also confiscated by the Hawks.

The men are expected back in court on 19 October.

Three people of interest identified in German tourist's murder - Cele

Police have identified three people of interest linked to the murder of the German national in Numbi Gate, Mpumalanga, Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Wednesday.

The tourist was shot and killed on Monday.

"Police seem to have satisfied themselves in terms of the information that they have collected from the family.

"They are not arrested; they are people of interest. We believe that we will be able to crack the case very soon," Cele said, while visiting the crime scene.

Cele also said there had been 11 reported cases of tourists robbed in the area.

"We have not done very well with arrests; only two arrests have been made," he said.
